What is Somatic Psychotherapy?

Somatic Psychotherapy (also known as body-oriented psychotherapy) is a holistic approach to therapy that addresses the mind-body connection directly. It tends to be more experiential than traditional talk therapy and often begins by deepening our awareness of somatic sensations and how they relate to the physical, emotional, and mental "story". We may incorporate movement, gesture, or work with touch in order to help deepen that awareness. Approaching the here and now experience with this level of mindfulness teaches us to be with and often influence our own autonomic nervous system responses such as fear, anxiety, numbness, or dissociation.

While I incorporate a somatic orientation in all my work, counseling may or may not include more direct body-based interventions, and any such interventions will only occur with your consent and interest.
